Enter Room Details

Provide the dimensions and any significant extra heat sources for your room.

Enter the longest dimension of the room in feet.

Enter the shorter dimension of the room in feet.

Estimate extra BTUs from heat sources.

Consider adding BTUs for: sunny rooms/large windows (~10-20% of base BTU), kitchens (~4000 BTU), rooms with >2 occupants (~600 BTU per extra person), or many heat-generating electronics. Leave as 0 for a basic estimate.

How This Calculator Works

This tool estimates the required AC tonnage using the following steps:

  1. Calculates the base cooling load in BTU using the formula: Room Area (Length × Width) × 93. (Note: The factor 93 is specific to this calculation model).
  2. Adds any specified 'Additional Heat Load' (in BTU) to the base load.
  3. Converts the total BTU requirement to Tonnage using the conversion: 1 Ton = 12,000 BTU/hour.
  4. Rounds the calculated tonnage up to the nearest standard AC size available (e.g., 1.0 Ton, 1.2 Ton, 1.5 Ton, etc.) to help ensure sufficient cooling capacity.
Disclaimer: Estimation Only This calculator provides a preliminary estimate based on the provided formula. Real-world cooling needs can be influenced by many factors not included here, such as ceiling height, insulation quality, window efficiency and orientation, local climate, air leakage, and the specific heat output of appliances. For an accurate assessment and system sizing, consulting with a qualified HVAC professional is strongly recommended before making any purchase decisions.
